The novel 'Malagiya Aththo' written by Prof. Ediriweera Sarathchandra was first published in 1958. Critics define this book as another turning point in the history of Sinhala novels, as it is written in a professional way, combining the environment, emotions, knowledge, all together, while standing apart from traditional love stories.
At the beginning of the novel, prof. Sarathchandra informs the reader about Japanese culture in a pictorial way, using a poetic language at the beginning of the novel. It is a story written around the love of Devendara San and Noriko San, an immortal loving couple in the annals of Sinhala literature.

Like clouds hovering in the sky before it rains, Devandara wanders the streets of Japan, randomly walks to the restaurant where Noriko works.
